re-ran inbox repair and still failed at 68% of phase 1. outlook.pst is >2g

Reconcile your post: "outlook.pst is >2g (<500kb)"

what I meant was that the outlook.pst file is less than 2gig so truncating
the file is probably not the solution - I could be wrong, but have not tried
in fear of loosing some of the contacts .....

If continually alternating the Inbox Repair Tool with a scandisk utility
fails to repair the PST file, you can use the following tool to find out
what can be fixed:

How did you manage to corrupt this file in the first place?

I do not know what corrupted the file. The contact file became inaccessible
around Wednesday of last week.
Thanks for the link ... will give it a try and see what happens.
Sorry for the confusion re > and < ... my bad.

Right now, make a backup of your PDA. If you're using WIndows Mobile, you
should be able to run a backup from witrhin ActiveSync and using the backup
tool that is usually included with the PDA. Use both methods. Then create
a new PST in Outlook and make it your default. See if you can sync the PDA
and get the data back. If so, then copy from the old PST what you can.

As you said you had got advise to use Scanpst.exe tool when you had some
error popped up. Scanpst.exe is recommended only when PST file is
corrupted. Inbox repair tool freezes when PST file is too large or it is
severely corrupted. Scanpst.exe can only repair minor corruption on PST
file. For severe corruption it is advised to go for third party tool. They
are many third party applications. Just google it out you will get some.
Download the software and repair your PST file.
