Outlook - OE 6 won't send an attached file

Asked By LVetter on 21-Jun-12 09:04 PM
Using OE 6 on an Windows XP SP3 system. It will send emails without an
attachment, but will not send an email with an attachment - it just sits
there until it times out.

I cannot think of anything I installed/changed/downloaded that could have
caused this.

Any ideas for resolution?

Thanks in advance...

Loren

1-Who is your mail server?
2-What is the size of the attachment?
3-Have you removed everything from the Outbox?

There are a few fixes I am sure will work, but please answer those
questions before I have you do anything unnecessary.

Thanks for the reply, Bruce.

1..I am using Comcast.. Emailing from my other computer through the same
server works just fine.

2. Any size of file. I have tried a 1 MB file, dropped to 100 KB file, then
tried a 5 KB file. Also tried different file types. No attachments will go
through.

3. Yes. The Outbox is clean.

Thanks again1

I forgot to ask if you got a time-out error message. Turn off e-mail
scanning and create a new Outbox and Sent Items. If you still have
problems, post the error message in its entirety.

************************************

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant
layer of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving,
and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting
changes and has even been responsible for loss of messages. Your
up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For
more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

Why you do not need your anti-virus to scan your email
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

The most efficient way to do this is to completely remove the anti-virus
program and then do a custom installation. When the opportunity to opt out
of e-mail scanning arises, opt out.

***************************************

Create a new Outbox, and Sent Items folder.

Do the following for the Outbox, and Sent Items after you move any
messages you wish to save to a local folder you create.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in
Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run.

In WinXP, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden.
To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files
and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or
in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

With OE closed, find the Outbox.dbx and Sent Items.dbx file and delete
them. New files will be created automatically when you open OE.

Good luck & let me know. Also, if this problem machine is wireless, then

How are you attaching the file? Insert (which attaches rather than
inserts) or copying into the body of the e-mail?

Have you tried disabling your anti-virus software or anything else you
installed that interrogates your e-mail traffic?

Have you tried rebooting into Windows' Safe Mode (with networking) and
retested?

Inserting.

No. But based on your and Bruce's suggestion, I will be doing this.

No. But I will do this as well.

Thanks, Vanguard!

I tried all the suggestions made by Bruce and Vanguard but still no luck. I
then thought of the automatic Windows updates that had been made the day
before all my troubles began. I removed the Windows updates, rebooted the
modem and now I am back in email joyland.
