Outlook - Cannot open Outlook
Asked By Charles W Davis

Windows Vista Home Premium, all updates applied. When one attempts to open
Outlook, it fails. The message reads:
The set of folders cannot be opened. Errors have been detected in the file
C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Personal Folders(1).pst. Quit
Outlook and all mail-enabled applications and then use the Inbox repair tool
(Scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file. For more
information about the Inbox repair tool see Help..."
Any ideas welcomed.

Gordon replied to Charles W Davis
So HAVE you run scanpst as suggested in the error report?
Charles W Davis replied to Gordon
Sorry, I did not run scanpst.
I did run the Microsoft Office Diagnostics. It reported 1 error and 1 error
repaired.
I have searched the computer and a .PST file does not exist. I have now
brought a new .PST file from the other computer. But one cannot open an
Outlook Data file without being able to open Outlook. I suppose I could
simply move the new .PST file into that location in the Personal Folders and
hope for the best. The computer is at the Club member's home and I will have
to wait until I can return to the member's home to take any further action.
However, I wonder about the location "...\Outlook\Personal
Folders(1).pst.... Why the "(1).pst" in the location?

Yes it does. It must because it is named in the error message. AppData is a
hidden folder, though, so browsing does not work unless you unhide folders.
Open Windows Explorer and enter
C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook
into the Address field. Click Go.
You do not want to do what you are trying. Even though you can add PSTs to mail
profiles using the Mail applet in Control Panel, you want to try to fix your
existing one first.
That will be a mistake. You corrupt your mail profile so that nothing will
work properly.
That means there was already a "Personal Folders.pst" file in that folder.

Brian, I finally got my hands on that computer again and the PST was located
and repaired.
Thank you so much. The club member is elated...

Check your pst file and make sure it is not broken or too big.You can try a tool called Advanced Outlook Repair. You can download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/aor.exe . I think it is a useful repair tool for you. It is easy to recover your PST file by using its wizard. It is a powerful tool to recover messages, folders and other objects from corrupt or damaged Microsoft Outlook PST files.
Detailed information about Advanced Outlook Repair can be found at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/

How to find folder tree for emails in search results? Outlook Is there a way to see the entire hierarchy of folders for a message in the Search Results window? I just did a search of all mail folders (Outlook 2007). It returned about 20 results. In the "In Folder" column, it only gives the subfolder. In some cases, there may be more than one folder with the same name.
